Joseph M. Norcross founded 'The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks' (BPOE) or 'The Elks" in 1868, originally as a social club for minstrel show performers known as the "Jolly Corks", in New York City. And since there were laws governing the opening hours of public taverns, it got established as a private club. It later took on more service roles and rituals, after the death of one of its members left his wife and children without income. This even led to the adoption of a new name, and identity, a recognizable creature of a stature that's indigenous to America, and following an 8-7 vote by fifteen members the 'Elk' was chosen over the Buffalo. Initially, theatrical performing troupes made up most of its membership, but it has since grown and evolved into a fraternal, service, and charitable organization, currently holding more than a million members, including men and women, in the USA, former territories of the Philippines, and the Panama Canal region. Its headquarters reside at Elks Veterans Memorial in Chicago, Illinois.
