Burmese Carved Teakwood, Red Lacquer Ware Rice Scooper.
Burmese Carved Teakwood, Red Lacquer Ware Rice Scooper with a Nicely Carved Elephant at The End of Handle.
An elephant is a symbol of hospitality, this symbol is used at the end of this Burmese Carved Teakwood Rice Scooper. The dark red lacquer applied over black lacquer is done in the traditional manner of Burmese artisans. When the handle is worn the black undercoat shows through in areas, giving this early 20th-century piece an inviting patina. A simple decorative pattern is carved along the top of the scoop. This whimsical and wonderful piece of utilitarian folk art is in solid condition with no cracks.
