Roman Padlock, 1st to 3rd Century AD.

With Zig-Zag Decoration, a bronze padlock with a discoid body and square-section hinged hasp, now broken, a conical boss with zigzag detailing. Property of a Surrey Collector acquired in the early 1970s.

The first padlocks, requiring a metal housing and sprung steel, were invented by Roman engineer-smiths sometime around 100-200 AD.
