Born as Lionel Herbert Blythe (April 28, 1878 - November 15, 1954) in Philadelphia, Lionel Barrymore was an American actor of radio, stage, and screen as well as a film director. He was well known in his roles as Mr Potter in Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946) and Mr Scrooge in Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol" (1938), and even won an Oscar for his performance in "A Free Soul" (1931). He was also a composer of music. He composed the theme song for the radio program "Mayor of the Town". His works also include "Scherzo Grotesque" and "Song Without Words" for piano, and "Tableau Russe" for orchestra. Barrymore was a very skilful graphic artist and maintained his own studio and artist's shop. He produced drawings and even etchings some of which were included in the 'Hundred Prints of the Year'.

He was a member of America's well-known theatrical 'Barrymore' family, even being most recently famous actress Drew Barrymore's great uncle.
