Mary Ball Washington Commemorative Coin, from The 'Great Women Of The American Revolution' Collection, Fine Pewter, Limited First Edition.

Mary Ball Washington, born Mary Ball in the Township of Lively in Lancaster County, Virginia (November 30, 1708 – August 26, 1789), was the second wife of widower Augustine Washington, a Planter in Virginia, and the mother of George Washington, the first full-term President of the United States, and also five other children.

She was the only child of Col Joseph Ball who passed away when she was only three years old, and Mary Montague who passed away when she was twelve. A lawyer named George Eskridge was placed over her care in accordance with the terms of her mother's will. Later on, in her adult life, she herself became a widow in 1743 when Augustine died, so she had to manage her home estate, and 276 acres of Ferry Farm Plantation with the help of others until her eldest son, George Washington, was old enough to take over the responsibility. She lived to see him command the Continental Army to independence and be inaugurated as the President of the United States in 1789. On her deathbed, she told George, who was ready to decline the presidency once he learned of her worsening health condition, these encouraging words, "Go and fulfil the high destiny which Heaven has foreordained you to fill. Go, knowing that you go with a Mother's and Heaven's blessings!".
