Hunters prize them for their long, curved horns, often turned into trophies or other ornamental objects. Although they’re a species of least concern on the IUCN Red List, there have been large declines in several parts of their range. They’re most susceptible to hunting, climate change, habitat destruction, and livestock overgrazing.

Identifying Characteristics

• Adults are about 4 feet at the shoulder.
• They are typically light taupe to tan in colour with lighter patches towards the bottom of their rump.
• Black markings extend from the base of the horns and sweep back in stripes over the eyes and cheeks, continuing down their necks and backs. They have black bands around all four legs.
• Both sexes have slightly curved black horns with light-coloured rings that average 33 inches long.

The Stamp on the back of this Photograph is the Paper Brand 'VELOX', of which this Photograph was developed onto. Invented by Leo Baekeland back in 1893, it was the first paper that was capable of developing High Quality 'Contact' or 'Gaslight' Printed Photographs under Artificial Lighting; meaning it could be handled using Low or even Yellow Safelight exposure in a darkroom. In comparison to previously used Photographic Paper which required Full Daylight exposure, it was a game changer; a product of Real Significance in the Pre-Digital world. Baekeland also invented a type of Plastic known as 'BAKELITE'. He continued to produce Velox until the acquisition of his company by George Eastman of KODAK in 1899. Kodak later phased out its production beginning around 1968 due to advances in Paper Technology and Printing Techniques. The number '10' is also noted on the back.
